Written and recorded during a period of significant change, the EP emerged in the months following Moore's university graduation as he navigated unemployment, a move from his childhood home and the uncertainty of preparing for his first tour. During a time of transition, recording became a source of comfort, focus and creative direction.
Musically, December, One Million marks a subtle shift in Moore's work. While retaining the melodic, guitar-led approach that characterised earlier releases, the EP moves beyond the American Primitive influences of the past and explores a broader range of textures and atmospheres.
The four tracks began life as pieces that didn't quite fit either Moore's previous release, Chamber Music, or a forthcoming full-length album. Rather than leave them behind, he developed them into a standalone collection with its own identity.
Notably, the EP contains no six-string steel-string acoustic guitar. Instead, classical guitar sits at the heart of the recordings, giving the music a distinct character that hints at the direction of future releases.
Inspired by classic standalone EPs such as Fall Be Kind, Chronic Town, Watery, Domestic and Spiral Scratch, December, One Million is a concise and personal release that captures a particular moment in time while looking ahead to what comes next.
